<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">We are in the middle of a huge change in our family. Empty nest some call it. Me? It’s
called a quiet house, okay quieter, dinners for two and lots less laundry!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Muff is headed off the Army bootcamp, Alec and Kristine are headed
to MO. What will I do with all my "spare" time?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">We sat through Muff’s graduation a week ago.
Listened to two valedictorians and one salutatorian. Very accomplished kids with 4.4 and higher
gpa's. They are headed to Harvard, Texas and U of I,
full ride scholarships, double majors, going to be great and save the
world.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I’m sorry, I truly believe they will flourish in
their chosen fields, no doubts. But
during their speeches, I heard lots about being doctors, lawyers and
scientists. I heard about making the
world better, solving all our problems and having it all planned out. I heard about kids that did excel in school, but I also heard of lot of "I" and "Me". What I didn’t hear was their
connection to their entire class. It
was about the 1% that never got a below an A. What I didn’t hear, was that regardless of what you intended to do out of
high school, that you matter. You may go
to be an auto mechanic, a beautician, bookkeeper or a soldier. But regardless of what you do, you matter
and you will make a difference….in your own life and we hope, the lives of
others.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Those are supposed to be inspirational speeches, encouraging the
class to go out, make the world their own.
I saw lots of yawns. I saw kids
who had not idea who the person sitting next to them was. And kids that still had no idea what they wanted to do. Where are the offering of words of wisdom or encouragement to
the entire graduating class, just the 1%?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">We don’t all have to go to an ivy league college, get a 4.0,
scholarships and awards from every organization. We do though, need to feel wanted, that we can
and will contribute to society and take pride in what we chose to do.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I hope that I have instilled in my children that what they do with
their lives is not as much for themselves but that their choices are a benefit
for others. I pray that it is more than
a simple career choice but a dedicated path they take that allows them to make
a difference in someone else’s life.
That in and of itself will be worth more than money, fame and glory.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">So for you, the top of the class graduates, stop for a moment and
wonder, where would you be giving that speech if the person hadn’t poured the
concrete, the mechanic hadn’t fixed the wheel bearing on your car, the soldier hadn’t
protected your right to freely speak and the farmer hadn’t grown the food you’ll
be sharing at your party later on. It’s
not all about square roots, chemical compositions and following the letter of the law.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I think as the time of last child’s journey to adulthood comes
close, I’ve proudly participated in all their journey’s and hope my involvement
encourages them to stay involved in life experiences and continue on throughout
their adult lives, living a life of service and a life of love. And that they know they can't do it without a contribution from everyone they meet. Society can't function with out each person's contribution.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What a blessing my kids have been.
I’m doing the “omg my baby’s graduating and moving away". I reflect on how my children have changed
me for the better as well as what I’ve hopefully instilled in each one. Empty nest? Gosh I hope not. I hope that they know they are always welcome to come home but just call first! I might need to defrost more for dinner, this cooking for two thing will take some getting used to and I doubt I'll have lots of left overs in the fridge .

Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04827086604447314588noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1353338904927025551.post-17215743211134897752016-04-20T10:45:00.003-05:002016-04-20T10:45:46.131-05:00Apologizes, again I was dead set on doing at least a blog post a week. New Year's resolution if you want to call it that. I'm so bad at those!

We hit January at a dead run. Legislation went all kinds of bonkers and we spent a lot of time emailing, calling and traveling to Des Moines to help fight for a person's right to continue to breed healthy, well cared for animals. I'm happy to say it was a win on all 3 fronts this year. Both bills in the house and senate are for the most part dead. The abuse bill is also dead.

For those going wait, wait, let me set the record straight. I have no patience for a person who abuses, harms or neglects any person or living being. What I have an issue with is creating more laws to solve a problem, when in fact the current laws are very good but not being enforced by the justice system. Fix that first then see if the laws need to be adjusted.

Legislative session hit it's 100th day this week, which means they are not being paid to work, so we will hear the final gavel soon so they can hit the campaign trails.

In between legislation battles, I was nominated from the floor and accepted a bid to run for the board of directors of the CWCCA. I'm proud to say I made it! Thank you to all who voted for me and I hope I can represent your views and values in the national club. Now that also means road trips! I expect to see some great areas of our county that I haven't been to before.

Let's see, Hill Top Equestrian Drill team is a blast, though Torey has other opinions on working that hard in the winter.

Muff is in the final stretch of high school, less than 30 days left. Then it's about 3 weeks off and she heads out to boot camp.

June basically is chaos-you'll find me rocking in the corner, mumbling nonsense. Just make sure I have a cold one in my hand please. Horse shows, dog shows, county fair, boot camp, drill team, dog class, and puppies. Yep, why not add to the mess with puppies?

Okay, back to my goals, write once a week.

In the meantime, here's he newest addition to Foggy Bottom, Wasabi. Yes, let the ass jokes commence.
I'm need to rant, so what better place?!

Saw my first craigslist ad of the gift return/exchange season.......the puppy given to a child as a gift for Christmas and well, it just isn't working out.

This is the reason we do not give animals as PRESENTS!!!! The shelters and rescues want you to listen to their sob story that every animal deserves a home for the holidays. That empty kennel runs and cages in their facilities is a great thing(don't get me wrong, it is) but wait......there's more.

I saw an ad over the holiday's that said that animals given as presents are more likely to stay in their home because of the additional attachment a person has to a gift given to them. This of course was sponsored by a humane society and rescue organization. Seriously????? What kind of world are we in that we are willing to offer a person and animal a life of discontent because of the emotional attachment of - but so and so gave it to me and I can't part with it.....even if I'm allergic, the pet is too big, too small, barks, I can't spend time walking, training, grooming, etc.

Recent story from a person looking for a new pet after having sent their old one to the bridge. Went to look at a dog at a local humane society, suggested by a friend. Dog is a large 75lb beast. Shelter does same day adoptions. Dog started out as a puppy with them, has been returned 3 times now because they didn't do home visits, follow through and placed the dog with a person understanding of the breed and committed to the dog. 3 times???? Dog is now fully grown, been shifted between homes, no training and they have no clue why the dog is back, again.

And last but not least, Iowa rescues are routinely doing transportation and mass adoption events for animals that are illegally transported across state lines. One rescue has a strong relationship with a Miami FL shelter and monthly trips bring dogs up from "over crowded shelters". Here's the catch-many of these dogs are unhealthy, have bite records, and and and....those "over crowded shelters" are now publicizing importing of dogs from out of the country! Seriously, I think our whole society has lost it's way.

Where is our God given common sense?

Morphing a bit---should have warned you this would be a random post, oh wait, that's the blog title!

Kids these days lack respect for elders, have no clue about the kindness of opening a door for someone, lack the patience to work for something they want and oh here's a good one--did you know that you can't send currency through the mail, but change like quarters and dimes isn't currency, it's change. OMG, beat my head on the counter. They can't write a check correctly, balance a ledger, count back my change, read cursive, let alone write it. Common sense is not being enforced in our society at the most basic level-please, thank you, elbows off the table, asked to be excused and stop whining when it's not all about you.

I'm seeing instagram accounts begging for followers, where the same kids can't give someone else the time of day. Worship of objects, unable to take constructive criticism because parents today can't bear to tell them no or be anything but a positive person. Really? Life isn't all about rainbows and unicorns. If you can't learn to handle the ups and downs as a child, what kind of adult will you be?

Now back to that animal as a present. Don't do it. just. don't. do. it.

Just sayin'

First off, this time of the year is hell for those of us in the corgi world. I'm not simply talking about the war we wage on mud and our low riders Nope, it's the frequenter calls, emails, texts or strangers on the street asking you if you have any "corgis" available.

UGH!

It's not just a "corgi"! I must apologize if you call and I sound exasperated. Because first and foremost, it's like asking someone if they have a retriever available. Or a sheepdog, or a spaniel or terrier. A golden is not the same as a labrador, an old english sheepdog is a far cry from a belgian sheepdog and so on......

Cardigan Welsh Corgis(cardis) and Pembroke Welsh Corgis(pemmies) are two different and distinct breeds. There is a section of what I loosely will call "breeders" who want to confuse you with semi facts and make you think they were one in the same. Simply because at the onset of mass transportation(turn of the century), a select group of people decide to breed the two together(about a 20 to 30 yr span. They registered them as separate breeds within the same litter. And it was not the entire breed groups but just a small, very small, select few litters that this happened with. Since that point all of the kennel clubs world wide have them as distinct separate breeds--not varieties of the same breed.

So for a few more facts; blue merle is not a hidden gene, it's not a color in pembrokes. Cardigans aren't cardigans just because they have a tail. Both have not only distinct structure , but origins and most importantly temperaments. No breeder in their right mind will dock a cardigans tail nor will a pembroke breeder leave tails on just because it makes them look more like a cardigan. There never should be breeding strictly for size and doodle bugs or toys or minis are not unique or even preferred.

What I ask is this.......please take your time and learn about the breeds. We know statistically that many dogs are in shelters, rescues or rehomed because of irresponsible owners who don't take the time to learn about and make an informed decision about their future breed of dog.

Make sure to meet some of the breed-older dogs, young adults and puppies. Talk to people who own the breed. Know what you are getting yourself into. Go to shows, trials, fun matches, meet-n-greets, kennel club meetings etc. Do your research! Never give a dog as a present, avoid adding a pet to the house during stressful times such as holidays, birthdays, big events. Find a reputable breeder or rescue and be patient.
I think in light of some recent events, it might be a good time to review these little words of wisdom....

Now that being said, let's talk.

Every time we sign a dog entry form, pay our membership dues or register a dog or litter, we agree to and have a MORAL obligation to uphold the bylaws, rules and COE's of that club. Be it AKC, your local all breed, performance or parent club.

To take this into context, let me say this. Working on canine legislation has opened my eyes to the fact that most of the a/r groupies are self centered. More better and bigger legislation is needed because they aren't getting what they want.

Current laws in most areas are just fine but lack the ability to enforce or the resources to enforce. Should that not be the concern and be the solution that needs worked on?

When it comes to the dog breeding and showing business, why is there a need to reinvent the wheel and create yet another list? Simply because something didn't go your way or action was not taken in a way that you wanted it, not because the system failed, but YOU failed to make an effort in the process.

We can't all get what we want all the time. We do have to compromise but that can't happen if you fail to participate in the process. And we won't always get everything we want, but we do need to work with those within the machine to make sure it's equal and fair.

So with that, I'm pretty happy with agreeing to the CWCCA and AKC terms as they are. I also can live with myself and what I do for my dogs without the need to add my name to yet another list that lacks boundries, policies or ways to maintain the integrity of it's principals.

Just sayin'.....

It's National FFA Convention time!

Here's a little ditty that I think many of you can relate to. I'm gonna tweak this for the dog people :)

You might be an FFA member if.....

Some people have a green thumb, but you have a Greenhand.

Your jacket is your formal wear.

You own more pairs of panty hoses than Walmart can make. "Another hole, seriously?"

You've contemplated buying those spray on panty hose.

During opening ceremonies you say all of the lines with the officers and don't pause at during the first line of the pledge.

Your fellow FFA members are more than just teammates or friends, they are family.

You go to National Convention with judt a few things, but come back with bags and bags of goodies.

You spend hours in a vehicle traveling.

You can sleep anywhere and in any position.

You have to correct people when they call you the Future Farmers of America and then you have to give them an FFA history lesson.

You spend more time with your Ag Teacher than you spend with some of your family members.

You get excited when you see FFA members from other states. It's not license plate bingo, it's FFA jacket bingo.

Your jacket is your hidey hole. Phone, purse, last night's dinner, a ribbon from a year ago and FFA manual.

You amaze everyone with how many pockets your jacket has. Pull a rabbit out of your pocket!

You bleed blue and gold.

Your calendar is full of different events and competitions--see me when I'm free in January.

You think a scarf and tie are the most classy thing you own.

You use FFA pick up lines, "Hey you are as beautiful as the rising sun."

You can run on hardly no sleep, early mornings and late nights are no big deal.

You can do a week's worth of make up home work in the van on the way to convention.

You pack an iron for every trip.

National Convention is like a vacation to you.

Have a great time at Convention!!! Oh and I need some new pens, can you work on that for me?

When the kid calls your name, wiggles her finger at you..............run! If possible, in the opposite direction as fast as you can.

Typically that request is followed by something foolish, such as this...........

Silly Oscar, you just don't get it yet.

At this point, it's the youngest one who still is in school. And I'm exhausted. It's tiring being an involved parent.

Saturday we, okay, I spent the day at the Armed Forces Reserve Center while Muff did her pt/future soldier training. It really was a great day learning about what they will be going through in boot camp, what to expect out of the armed forces and what opportunities are ahead of them. Dad gets to go next month as he was manning the vet visits and arena dragging.

We watched them do various tasks such as litter carries, gas masks, simulated weapons firing(cool simulator too), lift, throw and carry huge telephone poles. We all got served lunch, yep, MRE's. The history, the taste, the bartering between people for goodies.

Seriously, it was a blast. I did a lot of sitting, but I learned so much and Muff at the end of the day was still smiling and ready for the next month's challenge.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. The rain earlier in the week had everyone on edge. Seriously. But thanks to Dad, the show went pretty darn perfectly. He dragged the arena on Saturday and again on Sunday. Just one little muddy spot that we had to avoid. Horses washed, clipped, blankets on. Rio and his trailer loading issues-it's getting faster, he's just stubborn.

I sort of lost a little bet with the kid and that meant I rode! Not too bad. Decent placing in english walk trot. Extremely respectable placing in english equitation(one of my favorite classes) and we gamed it a little. Too much fun! Torey and I are getting in our groove, heck we won the Jumping Figure 8, the one class I figured the jerk would forget where he rear feet were.

It was totally enjoyable being around like minded people, having fun, joking. Small show, but big on heart.

I think the most memorable part of the weekend is seeing the parents actively involved. We not only offered logistics, ie, getting the horse to the show, but set a great example of how to be a horse person. Riding with the kids, sometimes getting beat by them! Giving tips, joking around and once again, showing them what we expect of them.

What I don't get, and no offense meant, is the parent who doesn't play the part. Granted it's hard for me to get into running a mile on ruined knees, or forcing myself to do sit ups, pull ups or push ups, but darn it I'm going to try. What gets me is the pony parents, but I know you see them in every sport-the drop them off, go sit and read a book parents. For me it's the ones walking around the horses, trying to avoid the "piles" in their flip flops and tanks tops. Seriously, what type of roll model are you for your children? You demand a helmet when your kid rides, but let them sit under the horse to clip? You don't stress the safety on a day to day basis because you don't know, so figure it out! If the kid sees you in flip flops and swim tops, what makes them remember about boots and well fitting protective clothing?

I'm vested in my child. Such that I make every attempt to provide a good roll model, actively participate in their activities and cheer, cry, sweat and encourage. I don't do a task for them just because I do it better, how will they learn and perfect? My job as a parent is not just to give them an activity to keep them quiet, but to get them involved in something that we can do together. That's why I'm on the kennel club board, why I am a committee leader/volunteer for 4-H, extension council, fair board, saddle club, etc.

I know a lot of parents can't, but it's the ones in their chair sitting their lawn chairs, reading the book, thumbing on their phone, or just plain sitting in their truck doing work. Sorry if you're overloaded but seriously, your kid values more than your money at these events.

Off my soap box once again,

Just sayin.....
Don't argue with me that you love it when your life suddenly changes and you are thrown into the black pit of what to now! This said as I stare at my accounting software and go what the fffffff?? We did a software upgrade yesterday and it's not going well.

I've been reading in some of my Facebook groups where someone presents an opinion as a truth, though through research and studies, they are proven wrong and yet the original poster is so set in their ways that they still stand by their post. I see it more in the teenagers and younger adults than those of us oldies. I'm willing to hear out your reasoning, prove it to me and honestly, I'm good at changing my mind for the better. But seeing the way our younger generation reacts is unreal to me. I mean where are the manners? Where are is the reasoning? What are we raising?

It's called the back fire effect. Here's a good read on it.

The Backfire Effect

I think that the best part of it resonates with what I said about this attitude being more prevalent in our youth, because it shows that you aren't that smart after all.

Now don't get me wrong, there are some awesome kids out there with great heads on their shoulders. I commend those parents for raising children that do question, that do research, that don't always take the word of their idols as fact and truth over anything else. Those kids are the ones I want running our government, choosing my nursing home and well, willing to engage in a well thought out conversation where they can and do have the ability to change.

Goodness knows I'm not perfect and yes, I'm stuck in my ways. But present me with logic, research and facts, I'm willing to sit down and reconsider. But honestly folks, I learned at a very young age to agree to disagree but always have an open mind. And to listen and respect your elders. Man that's another topic I don't even want to get started on.

Just sayin'....
The girls: Ms Martha, Lanie, Jenny(Rose) and Alexis(Allie)
And our little minion....Kevin.

Good Lord, everyone knows Kevin. He's got a life all his own-poking the ring stewards legs during figure 8's, eating fan cords...and lots of other things along the way, plus totally loving life with his kid. I don't think anyone has ever watched him in the show ring and said he hates it. Far from it...tail wagging so hard that his butt bounces. Not sure how he's gonna handle 6 mos with out his girl while she's off playing soldier.
Have an extra cookie on me!
And thank goodness we have our own horse trailer now! Which means the only nights we aren't doing something dog, horse or poultry is....next Friday, then the following Thursday, till the end of June.

Muff has been doing more training on Ladybug. The ever amazing pony is, well, amazing everyone. She has had her first ride in english attire. Natural. Did a barrel pattern last night at the clinic. Going to concentrate on turns this week but she's just the bee's knees.

And my main man, Rio, is finally sound(for the most part) and will start his new adventures in life. First it's halter classes. Which means he's gotta go out in public. Oh boy. As nervous as I was about that, he was really an angel. Loaded right up, came out, little wiggy and I think I'm deaf from all his whinning in my ear. But overall, not one nasty moment, he investigated it all and I think we are on to something. After fair, he's headed off to do 30 days and see what we get back from the trainers.

Oh boy, talk about princess. I think this time it's a bus load of puppies. Hope she makes it to the end of June!

And yet again, we have rain. The grass is growing. Lawn mower broke this weekend. Arena is knee high, but that's okay, never dry enough to really work a horse. Well the recovering horse that is.

Effective immediately, Iowa has cancelled all poultry shows at fairs(state and county), birds swaps and no birds will be allowed to be sold at exotic swaps, meets or auctions.

This is due to the Asian Avian Flu strain that has crippled the western part of Iowa as well as affecting many other states in the Mississippi flyway.

The key here is....read the announcement:

http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/press/2015press/press05212015.asp

Swaps, sales and auctions can still happen, just no BIRDS at those events.

Fairs and shows are looking at other avenues, especially for our kids that put their heart and souls into their projects.

If you ever have any questions, go to the source. Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship---IDALS, has confirmed to me directly that you can still buy privately from an individual or purchase chicks/birds online. Quarantines are in place in the affected counties. Other states are not banning sales of birds from Iowa or to Iowa.

BUT.............. it is imperative for all involved in the poultry industry to practice even better biosecurity and make sure to report anything to IDALS!!! Quarantine new birds for up to 30 days. Keep the flock away from wild birds as best you can. Clean boots in, dirty boots stay. Wash, disinfect all equipment coming and going.

For that matter, we are putting a little more restrictions on those that come on to our property. We ask that you call ahead and please, don't go wandering around. Though we try to raise a free range flock, we do have areas that are off limits and we ask you to respect that.

Okay....now.... I still need to get those chicks out of my house!!! Time to start hardening them off!
I will figure out who has grown thumbs. But really no worries there either. The barn manager has been fine tuning a new skill: poultry herding. Yes she's vying for the June employee of the month parking spot. And no I'm not kidding. The cat has helped Muff herd the chickens and ducks in for two nights. Heck, she's better than the dog!

Hum, wish she weren't spayed....I'd be breeding herding cats!
Sigh.

Last night was the "let's run around loose" event.

Pulled in the driveway and who is there to greet us but Bug. Easy peasy, walk to the side paddock gate, open, she walks in and is on the correct side of the fence now.

Turn and hum, why is there a flock of ducks and geese in the pasture? Yep, some bird has developed opposable thumbs and can undo the gate wire.

Milling around under the horses feet now, herding them back in and Frank(rouen hen) and Ethel (runner drake) are missing.

Down to the creek and they look at us like, what? Move along, nothing to see here, of course we aren't supposed to be here.

Herd them back up, Frank voicing her opinion the entire way.

Walk in the house....wait for it.....

One of Muff's d'uccle chicks is wandering around the study....with a granny dog watching intently. Luck the little bugger wasn't a snack.

Today-poultry gate shut tight. Checked for thumbs and didn't see any, wondering now which chicken was in on the jail break?

Bug and Moo, securely placed in front yard paddock-only thing they can do is eat grass and maybe scoop some poo-ha.

Chicks-top on brooder box.

I dread coming home tonight.
I'll stop right there as this post could go south so quickly.

This weekend marked our return to the adventure known as trail riding. The girls aka the hormone squad, headed up to Matsell's Bridge for a short ride with the CPSC. Never been there, planning on going back soon though! It was fun. Enjoyable area, lovely trails and fun conversation. The hormone squad got a good work out. Mares involved were Sketch, Laredo and the super duper LadyBug.

Let me tell you, that darn Ladybug is a heck of a pony. Never been out on a trail. Never been much of anywhere. Ended up out in front, lead most of the way and was quite the trooper through it all. She's so much fun. Laredo, whom everyone said the last time she was rode, was her typical broncy witch self. Not sure what horse they were riding but the one I was on, was an angel. Then there's Sketch. She is a sweet heart but notice to all, don't ride up on her. She's got a mean kick when a strange nose goes in her butt.

Enjoyable and both the girls had fun. So those empty spots on the calendar are being filled in with side trips on the trails.

Speaking of empty spots-there are really none. Unless it rains and some days I do the rain dance all day long. This week? Let's see-armed forces year end meeting, then a riding lesson, then PEO presentation and a youth council meeting. Tuesday, dog class, Wednesday, horse clinic, Thursday, go look at a pony and a FFA alumni meeting, Friday......

Last night the Muffinator got in the van and drove to her meeting on her own. I can't let that happen again....she comes home with things. Things like little black kittens called Oscar. Karma...just you wait. not that it's not a great addition to the menagerie but the kid's allergic to cats....and it's living in her room for now.

It's cold, I'm tired already and it's just Tuesday. June isn't here yet either.
It'll make your head swim. Our only saving grace has been events cancelled by the lovely rain we keep getting.

This week is....two 4-H meetings on Monday(and heavens, Muff had to drive herself to one!)
Tuesday-4-H dog class, Wednesday-4-H horse clinic, Thursday--NOTHING--well, dishes, a real sit down dinner, laundry, etc. Friday-FFA 40th anniversary banquet, Saturday-saddle club trail ride, graduation party. Sunday---empty for some reason.

Rinse, repeat.

On top of that on pins and needles with the evil four legged child, Rutro(Monroe) in TN at the national specialty, a set of xrays to OFA, two girls who I pray are bred and praying that Torey is healing.

Calgon, take me away!!!!

One of the things that I ran across was videos showing a rider on several different horses. The most interesting was watching the progression of the horses and the quirks they all picked up in the end. The rider didn't get it. Excuses were made about the horse, but no change in how the rider rode or trained. Same problem, different horses, same rider, hum?

I refer back to my dog kids. I always tell them, don't make excuses for your dog, it's not their fault because you either did or didn't offer the right command, rewarded too early or late, or just plan ignored what your dog was telling you. Always, always, go back to the handler and ask yourself, what have I been doing that elicits that reaction?

We are our dogs, and horses, best friends and worst enemies.

https://www.chronofhorse.com/article/we-have-recognize-our-horses-unique-selves

When I first started really riding competition horses, I had huge dreams. Hours and hours spent riding in a circle, perfecting this and that. My horse's trainer at the time really liked how we progressed, but he also said, when did you stop enjoying your horse? Huh? I thought I did enjoy my horse, but I found I enjoyed the process and had forgotten the beast under my saddle. So we made a point of having a fun day every so often. No circles, no reins jerks, spurs off. We'd go out and just ride-trails, roads, what ever came about. We stood in the creek. Raced on the flats. Splattered mud up on our legs(yes both of ours).

When we returned to the circles, I was relaxed, refreshed and so was my horse. My horse didn't have grumpy ears, choppy gaits, switching tails or a hollow back and I had to use my extra aids-spurs, reins and legs, less and less. My horse was more responsive because I wasenjoying my horse more than the process.

So many times we feel like we have to fix things, when in reality, we need to adapt more to the situation. It's not broke, maybe we are?
I'm going to print out this pyramid to keep in the barn.

Well here's to a great weekend! It's monsoon season here. The yard is ten feet tall, no riding because everything is slippery but hey, the poultry is happy.....lots of earth worms to eat!

When isn't one of our weekends whirlwind these days? So Saturday off to get horse equipment repaired, look for some new stuff, stock up on supplies in Hazelton.

Sunday, up at the butt crack of dawn to get in line at Waverly. Boy, it was nuts. The parking needs to be addressed as well as some of the set up. Just not really well organized and not a lot of stuff of quality either.

Though some how I ran into several people who indeed did know what a cardigan was and even knew of some of the old time cardigan breeders. WOW! Oh and several others wanted to know how much I'd sell Mal and Kevin for....you all know that there are days I'll pay people to take Kevin :) Not one of those days. Sorry not for sale.

We did come home with this...

and this.....

I've been hunting for golden lace wyandotte chicks for ages, finally found some. And Muff and I decided we needed a goat. And yes, we are looking for a second one to keep this one company. Phoenix thinks it's a cool play toy. Dogs, oh can we chase it? Ducks--what the hell did you do now???

And while we sent off the Muff on her trip, that left Hubby and I as empty nesters. Shocking! What to do? Why let's clean the barn! Finally, after 11 years, we have a nice tack room, all the saddles hung up, bridle racks coming this week and it's super fun to have it all in one organized place.

Did I mention I rode the princess too? No limp, little stiff and yes, I now have my trail horse back. For some odd reason she's stuck in reverse. Can't stand still, keeps moving slowly backwards. Nothing is simple is it?

The chickens, they did organize. And they did escape. To the barn. To the field, the pasture, the front yard, the front paddocks......they're every where, they're every where.

In my study, no less. There's a wading pool with a tall expen around it-nine 7 week old chicks. If anyone want's some cochin bantams, all pullets, I've three available. They are residing with 4 ameraucana pullets.

Up on the large grooming table sits a row of brooder totes. Lights glaring. One has 3 week old buff leghorns and buff easter eggers, the other has more buff leghorns and ameraucanas. Anyone want the buffs?
Last one, which we set up last night because Muff just can't say no to ameraucanas. New residents are brown reds and blue wheatens(we think).

I still have bantams and call ducks in the dog kennel. Moving them out to the new almost finished building this weekend. It's like one of those little board games. You know the one where they slide the pieces around to put them in order but you have only one empty space and have to shift and move?

Yep that's totally what it's like around here. Move this so that we can then move that. Pictures of the chaos to follow.....this weekend is the Waverly Swap. Yes I have more chicks reserved....golden lace wyandottes. Then in two weeks, the last of the bantam chicks come in.

Hum is this me? Oh we need an intervention.....

Cindyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04827086604447314588noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1353338904927025551.post-44622096731016190662015-04-09T14:31:00.000-05:002015-04-09T14:31:50.312-05:00little random ranting going onI read several blogs. I love to read that people have the same issues I do. That the struggle to keep up with the daily chaos is not purely designated to only me. BUT....I've recently stopped reading a couple blogs simply because the poor me crap gets really old at times. Especially when it's self induced, it's because you're claim to fame is is is ...well, that you are learning as you go??? Or that you are wallowing in self pity in order to get attention?

Now don't get me wrong, there are times when I wonder what the hell am I doing or why the heck am I doing it? But I chose not to blab it across the blogosphere. Nope, I leave that to the many emails I exchange with a select few people-ones that love to snicker and snort right along with me as I do the old "V8" head bop.

Of late I think my email conversations are along the lines of ....did you see these comments from so and so on Fb? OMG, are they dying for some attention or what? Oh poor poor me, look at how foolish I make this look. Or even better--why should we really care that some people just seem to have all the dumb stupid luck? I swear, karma is on vacation with some people.

Okay, so for my last random rant...training your dog. There are a couple awesome training blogs out there. I enjoy learning, I love the ability of people to see the humor in our dogs. But then I read so many comments about not having the talent or it's not my cup of tea or well, my dog just isn't made for that. Get a life---everyone trains their dogs. No wait, the dog trains them. Don't leave the trash can out, put away your shoes, when you are on the phone it's the best time to get attention. I could go on and on. That came from an article I read in a hunting magazine about 20 years ago. We might think that we train our dogs but in fact, our dog's know better...they've trained us.

This is my favorite quote because honestly, I'm not a good trainer, but that hasn't stopped me. You say-not a good trainer? I have no focus and rarely push myself like I should to work with me dogs as much as I could. That's a me issue. My dogs, thank GOD, cover my ass and make me look good.

"Titling a dog does not mean you are the best trainer or that you have the best dog....

It means you never gave up, overcame the disappointments, didn't give in to your critics and learned enough to realize how little you actually know. "

Ranting over. Remember this blog is titled--Random Thoughts. Believe me, it's one of those random days.

Just sayin'....
